CITY POWER LAUNCHES A TRANSFORMATIVE YOUTH SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UNISA ENTERPRISE, DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR AND AFRIC TRAINING COLLEGE

City Power, in partnership with UNISA Enterprise, Afric Training College, the Department of Labour’s UIF unit, and African Bank, have successfully launched a major youth empowerment initiative to combat unemployment through skills development and enterprise support. The programme officially launched on 6 August 2025 at City Power’s Head Office in Reuven, with beneficiary induction set for 8 August 2025.

Targeting 1,200 unemployed youth aged 18–35, the six-month, fully funded programme offers two streams:

  1. Electrical Skills Development – 400 participants will receive accredited training in electrical engineering, solar and gas installations as well as street lighting at City Power’s Roodepoort Skills Training Centre.
  2. Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) – 800 participants will undergo a structured incubation programme in New Venture Creation, business compliance, tendering, and sustainability, delivered by Afric Training College and UNISA Enterprise at selected UNISA campuses.

Participants will receive monthly stipends and, upon completion, will earn recognised qualifications and 12
months of post-training support, including business registration and job placement opportunities. The
programme aims to build youth-led businesses and equip participants to contribute to South Africa’s energy
and infrastructure sectors.
